I've always kinda liked the 89-94 Mercury Capri. It's just a cool quirky little car. One of the few American cars I'd say that about.

Well I just found on on CL for a stupid low price. And it's even the XR2 Turbo model. It has a mazda 1.6l Turbo motor with 132hp, and weighs about 2450lb. Sounds good to me.

One of the few American cars I'd say that about.

depends on what you consider American though. Pretty Australian to me :)

I do like them though

Yeah, it's not really American at all. Produced by Australians out of pieces from a Japanese parts bin, then re-badged and imported into America.

It's probably sad that it's one of my least favorite Mercurys.

no it did not. I would have even taken the name being transferred to a Mercury version of the Probe GT, it would have been quite a bit faster.

I don't mean to be that guy here hating on the car you want though, sorry if I was.

I'm kind of the "resident Mercury guy" is all lol I'm contracted and bound to comment on all things Mercury.

Ford's FWD Miata made out of Mazda parts.

Love this car. I'd take a '91 5.0 Mustang and slap this front end on if I could.

A relative of mine has a 91 Capri, although not an XR2 Turbo. I learned how to drive a stick in that car.

He had a 79 Fox body Capri, and a 76 euro-Capri before that... but now, since it is kyboshed, he has a 2005 Mustang convertible, but he is a bit of a convertible nut... he also has an early-74 chrome-bumper MGB, in addition to the 91 Capri and Mustang convertibles.

the 90's era Mercury Capri was an fair trade exercise with Australia. Their trade laws required exporting a car built there to offset cars being imported... so Ford exported a few Capris, in order to be able to sell Lincoln Town Cars in Australia.

It is Australian built, from the japanese Mazda 323 chassis platform and drivetrain, with a german made convertible top. There are almost no actual blue-oval sourced parts... and things like the alternator V-belt are not common, and aftermarket alternator pulleys aren't machined just right, and tend to burn out the belts... but the AC belt is serpentine... it is a bit of an odd combo. (recent alternator replacement issues with aftermarket parts, original parts are long out of production, but otherwise the car is quite inherently reliable, as is the RWD Miata.)

The Turbo Capri was notably faster than the atmospheric Miata of the same years... with the same B-series 1.6 liter engine... but the Miata's longitudinal, RWD layout, with double wishbone suspension made Miata the *much* better handling car... and it won on looks, also, with it's Lotus Elan-like curvaceous design.

Capri is a bit larger inside, with a flatter floor, and a slightly wider cabin, a vestigial rear seat (good for a cooler, and lower 2+2 insurance rates, but not really well suited for a person larger than a child) It also has a hard-covered bay for the complicated-folding top, and a similar sized trunk to the Miata, where the Miata's interior has a transmission tunnel, no rear seat, a complicated little vinyl cover for the simple-to-fold top, and only the trunk space for storage.

I quite like the capri convertible... but there are reasons I actually OWN a Miata.
